A warehouse manager is responsible for the efficient inflow and outflow of goods from the warehouse. In addition to managing the logistics, they also handle the scrutinizing of receipts,  monitor potential pilferage and own the technology driving the warehouse.

A warehouse manager supervises all employees within the warehouse as well as coordinates with all the external stakeholders.

Question 1: Tell me about yourself?

This is by far the most common introductory question in any job interview. This is typically to break the ice and to put you at ease. While it’s important to be prepared for this question, you do not want your response to come across as memorized.

Remember that, while this question may appear to be an invitation to tell your entire narrative, your interviewer is unlikely to be interested in hearing about all you’ve ever done.  “I was born and raised in New York, and have extensive knowledge of the area. I’ve worked for ABC Warehouse Ltd. for 9 years and have held jobs such as Package Loader, Courier, Dispatcher, and Team Lead. In my most recent position, I was able to finish various management training programs, supervise and lead all positions inside the station, and work on special projects with Senior and District Managers.

I like being a leader because it allows me to empower and motivate my team. I think that these experiences and training have qualified me to take the next step and work with you as a manager.”

Question 2: Of all the places you could work, why did you choose to apply to our company?

This is a general question that the interviewer will ask early in the interview to start the conversation, gather some background information, and learn more about you. This allows you to direct the interview to a topic about which you are knowledgeable and can respond to the questions you will most likely be asked.

“Because the materials you manage, the operations you perform, and the overall logistics you execute correlate well with my previous experience, I chose to interview with this organization.

I’ve also heard nothing but positive things about the company from current and previous employees. Finally, I’d be thrilled to work for an organization that is an industry leader and inventor. The supply chain technology here is among the best you can get, and I stand to gain a lot of lessons in this role”

Question 3: What is your management style?

Avoid using labels at all costs. Depending on which management expert you listen to, some of the more frequent descriptors, such as progressive, consultative, and persuading, can have a variety of interpretations or descriptions.

The situational style is safe because it states that you would manage based on the situation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

“Delegating duty and authority, in my opinion, is critical. Low expectations or ego should not hold back a team’s ability to develop and thrive as individuals and as a whole. I believe in forming a group. Each team member should understand their function, know where they fit in, and feel confident in their ability to rely on one another.

Real-time feedback is also something I believe in. If you make a mistake, you should be aware of it right away. Regardless of whether it is correct or incorrect, the longer an input is delayed, the less effective it becomes.”

Question 4: What experience do you have when it comes to the warehouse manager position?

You should mention specifics that are relevant to the position. If you know you won’t have much experience in the position you’re going for, prepare for this question ahead of time and make sure you’ll be able to give some related instances based on your previous experiences. Almost every interviewer will admire your self-assurance and satisfaction in your job experience, as well as your enthusiasm for applying these useful abilities to your future career or position.

Question 5: Can you provide an overview of your general responsibilities in your previous warehouse position?

This question may appear redundant because you already included this information in your CV, which is why you were invited to the interview in the first place. You will be expected to study your résumé and build on the material included during an interview. It’s a good idea to bring many copies of your CV to the interview for both the interviewers and yourself to use as a reference when answering questions like these.

Question 6: What steps do you take to keep your professional knowledge about warehouse logistics updated?

The warehousing and logistics sector is always changing and has been disrupted by technology. Much of this might be attributed to the rapid increase of online commerce and international trade as well. The warehouse manager is responsible for staying current with these advancements. Personally, my years I have put in the industry so far has been the biggest educator since I have seen with my own eyes how much things have changed and evolved. 

We use Skubana extensively to manage operations in my current warehouse. I’m a big fan of their automated inventory replenishment and auto PO feature. It’s fascinating how technology has made warehousing so simpler.

At the same time, new tools and technologies are always coming up. And I’m a regular reader of MHW and have learned quite a lot about the changes in the industry from here. 

Question 7: Can you discuss what unique methods you would use to manage the kind of materials we handle?

This is a follow-up question to the prior one. Whenever you give an answer during an interview, you can expect follow-up questions. This suggests that the interviewer is passionate about the subject and wants to learn more about it. You inspire follow-up questions by keeping your responses succinct and to the point.

“Fortunately, I’ve worked with a variety of materials similar to those your company handles. I would make use of specialized racks and storage bins to make material handling easier. Question 8: What have you done with regards to personal development when it comes to a warehouse manager position in the last 12 months?

I decided to enroll in a summer business administration course at the local community college on my own. I learned a lot about communication and teamwork, and I was able to improve my overall management abilities as a result of this. Despite the fact that it may not be immediately related to this position, I believe the overall experience I gathered will be a valuable asset here.”

Question 9: Do you have direct experience maintaining warehouse equipment and the overall condition of a warehouse?

This is another question that may surprise you, given that your resume lists your work experience. These types of questions, on the other hand, will be asked throughout the interview to calibrate the information you’ve supplied and ensure that your responses are consistent. Rather than becoming frustrated, continue to respond to the questions calmly and professionally throughout the interview.

Question 10: How would you go about hiring additional temporary staff to handle an upsurge in shipments?

There are ebbs and flows in warehouse operations. It is your role as a warehouse manager to plan for these and ensure that you have the resources needed to respond to both surges and drops in activity. The interviewer is trying to figure out how you go about accomplishing this and reacting to any changes that may occur by asking this question.

 “While I make every effort to keep a steady operation, seasonal fluctuations, new clients, and other events inevitably result in unanticipated increases in activity. Question 11: What methods do you use to schedule employee shifts?

Any warehouse manager’s job entails scheduling employee shifts. While this may appear to be a simple task, there are some difficulties. These are based on how well employees get along with one another, the skills and abilities each employee possesses and can offer to the job, and ensuring that employees have enough work without being overworked.

Question 12: How do you communicate both achievements and issues with the organization’s management?

This is also a follow-up question. It alludes to a response you gave earlier in the interview on your overall responsibilities and roles as a warehouse manager. This is a question pertaining to the operations of a warehouse. The purpose of operational questions is to learn how you go about executing your work. Question 14: Based on your experiences and your study of the logistics industry, what changes are you anticipating in the warehouse industry in the next few years?

This is a follow-up question to your previous response on how you stay informed about the warehousing and logistics sector. Doing an extensive study on the company you are interviewing with before the interview is the greatest method to prepare for an interview and anticipate the questions you will be asked.

Question 15: I like what I’m hearing but we’ve got a ton of candidates. Why should we hire you?

It’s a simple question with one caution: don’t trash your fellow interviewees. On the one hand, you have the chance to stand out from the crowd. Alternatively, you should not make assumptions about the abilities of other candidates. Focus on your own qualities, and if the interviewer hasn’t already, now is the moment to bring up that one “slam dunk” characteristic about yourself. Is there a right or wrong way to respond to this question? Consider the following responses:

  • Right now, I really need a job.”
  • “I’m in desperate need of money.”
  • “Your office is close to where I live.”
  • “What you guys do has always piqued my interest.”

There’s a pattern to these answers.  All of these responses show that they are beneficial to you. While every employer expects these factors to play a role in some way, they are not the reasons they will hire you. Clearly demonstrate what has made you a productive employee and how you see yourself contributing to and enriching the organization in the future.

“I am uniquely qualified to thrive in this warehouse management role because of my experience in effectively controlling inventory inflow and skills in designing effective, streamlined schedules. I understand you’re looking for someone who is well-organized and pays close attention to detail.

My former employer required me to manage schedules for X number of employees and I also managed to reduce late delivery by 15%. I’m looking forward to applying my organizational expertise to your warehouse.”
